Se trata de dos conjunciones que usamos para expresar un objetivo o finalidad, normalmente los utilizamos con verbos modales (can, would, will, etc). Te damos las claves para que puedas ponerlos en práctica más a menudo y sin errores:
Clave1: Diferencias en el uso
In order that – se utiliza en entornos formales y normalmente es más empleado cuando se escribe.
👉 In order that you can sign the form, please print it out and mail it to this address.
So that – tiene un uso para situaciones más cotidianas.
👉 I’ll go by car so that I can take more luggage.
Si se trata de una situación más informal podemos omitir el that de So that.
👉I’ve made some sandwiches so(that) we can have a snack on the way.
Clave2: ¿Cómo se expresa el futuro con so that o in order that?
In order that – Se utiliza el presente simple para expresar futuro.
👉 We will send you a reminder in order that you arrive on time for your appointment.
So that – Se puede usar el presente simple o el will después de so that para mostrar el futuro.
👉I’ll post the CD today so that you get it by the weekend», (or … so that you will get it …).
Por último, so that también puede tener el significado de ‘with the result that’.
👉 The birds return every year around March, so that April is a good time to see them.
